They are not two names for the same finish
Both can sit within a restrained architectural palette, but their construction paths are different. Microcement is built through preparation, reinforcement where specified, base coats, decorative coats and protection over a suitable surface. Polished concrete is produced by mechanically working a concrete surface.
That distinction affects when each option can be considered, how existing construction is handled and what the finished surface reveals.
Existing buildings and renovations
Microcement may be considered over a range of stable, correctly prepared substrates, making it relevant when an existing surface is being retained. Suitability still depends on bond, movement, moisture, transitions and exposure.
Polished concrete depends on having an appropriate concrete surface to work with. The condition, composition and appearance of that surface influence what polishing can achieve.
Appearance and variation
Microcement is hand-applied, so tonal movement and texture respond to the applicator, selected system, scale, light and protective finish. Polished concrete reveals characteristics of the concrete surface and the chosen mechanical finishing process.
Neither should be selected from one tightly cropped photograph. Review samples, larger references and the way the material will meet adjacent surfaces.
Movement, cracking and repair
No decorative finish can make substrate movement disappear. Existing cracks, joints, transitions and structural movement need to be understood before either approach is specified.
Repair expectations should also be discussed early. Hand-applied and polished mineral surfaces both develop their own visual character, and a local repair may not be invisible.
A practical decision framework
Begin with the current substrate, whether the project is new or existing, the intended application, exposure, desired material character and maintenance expectations. Then compare feasible systems rather than treating the choice as a purely visual one.
- What surface exists now
- Whether the build is new construction or a renovation
- How movement and transitions will be handled
- The traffic, water and cleaning exposure
- The desired texture, sheen and tonal variation
