Substrates and preparation
Can microcement be applied over existing tiles?
It can be considered over tiles that are firmly bonded and form a stable substrate. The surface needs cleaning and compatible preparation, while joints, lippage, contamination, moisture and movement must be addressed. Loose tiles or a failed wet-area build cannot be corrected simply by coating over them.
Can microcement be applied over concrete or screed?

Can microcement be applied over plasterboard, render or fibre-cement sheet?

Can microcement be applied over timber or MDF?

Can microcement be applied over a waterproofing membrane?

What happens if the existing substrate is cracked?

If the substrate continues to move, that movement can transfer through a decorative finish despite careful preparation.
How are joints, movement and reinforcement handled?
The approach depends on the substrate and the purpose of each joint. Structural or movement joints should not be hidden without assessment. Reinforcement mesh, repairs, primers and base coats may reduce risk in appropriate situations, but they do not remove structural movement or justify a no-cracking guarantee.
Wet areas and performance
Is microcement waterproof or water-resistant?
A decorative microcement finish should not automatically be described as a waterproofing membrane. The complete system and selected sealers can provide water resistance suited to particular uses, but wet-area compliance depends on the required waterproofing system beneath the decorative finish. Product-specific waterproof claims need supporting certification.
Does a microcement bathroom still need compliant waterproofing?
Yes. Where waterproofing is required, the wet-area build must meet the applicable National Construction Code requirements and use an appropriate compliant waterproofing system. Microcement is the decorative finish and should not be used to bypass waterproofing, drainage, junction or penetration requirements.
Does microcement crack?
